Many thanks to our donors and supporters for making 2020 a success despite being a challenging year due to the Covid-19 pandemic. There were no corona virus cases reported in the communities we serve and the total infected in Sierra Leone is minuscule compared to the rest of the world.
In 2020, because of you, we achieved a significant milestone by completing the water well and toilet facility projects. The children and their parents will no longer have to walk miles to fetch safe and clean drinking water. Completing the toilet provides the children a safe facility to use, avoiding the need to use bushes which create an unsanitary environment.
The Three Communities Primary School is now Hope Academy Primary and Secondary School. Enrollment spiked significantly with children coming from the neighboring villages to attend the school - 151 pupils are currently enrolled. We hired two additional teachers with teaching certificates to make sure that the children are receiving a quality education and using the syllabus prescribed by the Sierra Leone Ministry of Education. Ten students took and passed the National Primary School Examination (NPSE); they are now in Junior Secondary School.
We want to express our heartfelt thanks and gratitude for taking time out of your busy schedule and on a rainy day to attend Education for Hope fundraising event, “The Beginning of Something Great” The event was a success and we also are attracting new ambassadors to our cause, creating awareness of our work and impact in the rural communities in Sierra Leone.
Thank you again, together, we are making a difference in the lives of underprivileged children in rural communities in Sierra Leone.
We look forward to your continued support of Education for Hope.
Education for Hope (EFH) held its Board orientation and annual retreat on November 4th and 5th, 2018. The organization welcomed new Board members and elected new officers for the 2019-2021 term. The Board remains committed to build on our core competencies and core values. The organization will continue to use technology to effectively manage its operation, making sure that donor investments are spent wisely and on programs that deliver impact.
The organization will continue to focus its efforts in implementing programs in rural communities of Sierra Leone. EFH will explore partnership opportunities to bring other services that are lacking in the communities served. The organization will support the Ro-Tumba Primary School and the Three Communities Primary and Secondary School by providing educational resources, by building additional infrastructure or repairing existing structures, and by supporting teachers and students. For a long-term sustainable strategy, we will work with the Sierra Leone Ministry of Education, Science, and Technology to assume the schools into the government-assisted school programs.
Many thanks to Kirkland and Ellis, LPP, for hosting us at their Washington, D.C. location.
Education for Hope (EFH) embarked on an ambitious journey in 2013 to build a new school from the ground up, which will serve three communities where there are no schools. Because of the lack of schools, the children do not go to school, and those who are strong enough walk miles away to attend the closest school. The new school is equipped with six classrooms, an office, and a library.
The project was delayed due to the Ebola virus outbreak that restricted travel around the country. Despite this setback, EFH is glad to announce that the Three Communities Primary School in Rogbomtama village in Sierra Leone was opened on Monday, October 1st, 2018. This school will serve as a primary and junior secondary school to 132 children enrolled in 1st grade through 6th grade and 14 students enrolled in Junior Secondary School.
Many thanks to you our donor and supporter, as without you we would not have accomplished this milestone!
With your support, we plan to complete the water well with a hand pump to provide clean water and build an eight-stall toilet for better sanitation.
A big thanks to you for supporting and donating to our GoFundMe Campaign “Back to School Supplies Drive” in April. These supplies will benefit approximately 212 children of RoTumba Primary School, Hope Bilingual Primary School and Hope Academy Junior Secondary School in Sierra Leone. With your support, we raised $1,225.00, surpassing our goal of $1,000.00 to purchase these school supplies.
With the funds raised, we bought 200 drawstring sport packs, boxes of crayons, notebooks, packs of erasers, packs of pencils, and pack of pens. Each drawstring sport pack was stuffed with these supplies based on student grade/class level.
We would also like to thank our volunteers who helped with stuffing each sports pack with necessary supplies. They had fun in the process of making a difference in the lives of children miles away, and we’re looking forward to their assistance with this event next year.
Because of your support of “Back to School Supplies Drive”, together we are making a difference and giving hope to the children in these communities. The children are excited to begin their educational journey.
Our core values include Accountability and Transparency ensuring that donations are spent on our programs as prescribed and in accordance with the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) regulations. Our annual tax return (Form 990) filed with the IRS provides a clear picture of our financial activities as it relates to our programs and operations. The 2017 (Form 990) tax return has been completed and filed with the IRS. You are welcome to review it and provide any feedback!
In 2017, we saw an increase in total revenue compared to 2016. Hence, it positioned us to be able to complete the Three Communities Primary School Project in time for the 2018/2019 academic school year. EFH continues to be run as an all-volunteer organization, making sure that donations are spent directly on our programs and activities, resulting in a greater impact.
Many thanks for entrusting us with your hard-earned resources to make a difference in the lives of the forgotten.
Our Executive Director, Mr. Momodu W. Jalloh recently visited Sierra Leone to check on the status of the school for the Three Communities Primary School project. The library is complete and classrooms and office are furnished. The project team is currently finishing the interior and exterior painting and building the steps. The school is approximately 90% complete and it is on track to be opened in time for the 2018/2019 school academic year.
The Executive Director was very impressed with the progress of the project and is pleased with the work of the country’s Coordinator, project team, volunteers, residents of the villages, and village elders. He thanks them all for their efforts and support throughout the project.
The kids are excited and looking forward to the start of their educational journey in September.
Our thanks and appreciation to you for your trust and continued support of our programs. Without your support, we would not have been able to accomplish so much with so little.
Education for Hope would like to thank all of the donors who contributed to the Back to School Supplies Drive on GoFundMe. We exceeded our goal of $1000 to purchase backpacks with school supplies for the new students of the Three Communities School. To see the school progress, view the project page.
